2009 is a very important year for London's Big Ben: the world’s most famous timepiece, the king of clocks, celebrates its 150th anniversary!
From today Big Ben – tourist landmark, London icon, symbol of parliamentary democracy – begins a year of anniversary celebrations starting with the launch of a website.
It is a very 21st-century way of marking the survival of an institution that is rooted in the technology of another era.
The Big Ben 1859-2009 site features information about the history of the Clock Tower, details how the Clock works and why it has stopped occasionally in the past, and includes works of art and archive material about the Tower and the Great Bell.
The site also takes users behind the scenes with an online virtual tour and exclusive downloads with banners, ringtones and screensavers celebrating the 150th anniversary.
